Class 4

Welcome to Year 4!

Class Teacher: Mrs E Strydom

I am Mrs Strydom, a senior teacher who started my teaching career in South Africa where I taught for 10 years before relocating to England with my husband and two daughters.

In England I have 17 years of experience in a range of different schools, from rural one form entry to large multi-cultural urban schools. Seeing children grow in confidence and succeeding in an area they previously struggled with, is very rewarding.

At each school, I developed a new passion and skill with children at the centre. Painting large backdrops for annual summer productions whilst involving my after school Art club, teaching children how to play chess and taking them to tournaments, running concerts and talent shows etc. are some of the most memorable activities.  Besides the Arts, I am also passionate about the environment and started an Eco Club when I joined Dorney five years ago. Since becoming Science leader, I have also started a lunchtime Science Club, where the KS2 Science Ambassadors run fun activities for the younger learners in the school.

In my spare time, I sing in a local community choir, paint, and work in my garden as well as cultivating and collecting succulents.

Lamps in Year Four

This term we combined our Design and Technology skills with our Science skills. We designed a lamp for ourselves or a family member.  After designing our lamp and thinking carefully about the purpose, we made the frame using willow. We then installed some fairy lights to add additional light, before covering our lamp in tissue paper dipped in PVA glue. When this dried, we decorated our lamps with coloured tissue paper. The final step was to carefully put our own electric circuit with an LED inside the lamp.  Before we took our lamps home, we used them in our Christmas production to light up the room during our final song.

"When I use my lamp in my room, it helps me fall asleep and I am very proud of it."   Charlotte

"I really enjoyed making my lamp. Now I can read  'The Wimpy Kid ' at night."  Diesel

"I use my lamp for when it is dark and I’m playing in my room or watching tv."  James

"I use my lamp in my bedroom so I don’t use up electricity."  Max

"I loved making and designing my lamp." Joshua

"I really enjoyed making our lamps and it was really kind of Mrs Strydom to let us.  I gave my lamp to my parents and they thought it was really good."  Grace

"I am using my lamp all the time. I really like it. It goes in my bedroom and it is very helpful."  Ruby

"We used willow, tissue paper and fairy lights. We also added a circuit. I really enjoyed making my lamp."  Cerys

"The hardest part was making the skeleton because the willow kept popping back up." Harry

"It was hard, but fun making the lamps."  Lucas

"I use my lamp for reading to my mum and dad. I call it the 'Jet Ski Car'. "Jude
